Things to do in Siem Reap

Most visitors come for the temples and then spend their evenings in town. The things to do in Siem Reap after a day among ruins are easy to plan: a circus show, a museum visit, a walk around the Old Market and a meal near Pub Street. If you still need to book the temples, start with Angkor Wat tours and the Angkor Pass, then come back here for the rest.

Siem Reap sits about 4 km from the Angkor ticket office on Road 60, so town and temples are close together.

Pub Street and the Old Market

The centre for shopping, eating and going out.

Pub Street and the Old Market area form the busiest part of town. You find restaurants, bars and shops there, and it is lively after dark. If you sleep close to it, expect noise at night. Opening times differ from business to business, so do not plan around a fixed closing hour. See where to stay in Siem Reap if you want to choose between a quiet and a central area.

The evening show starts at 20:00 and lasts about 1 hour, with a programme from 17:30. On some dates in November an extra show runs at 17:00, so use the date calendar. Booking ahead is recommended, and walk-in guests are seated only if seats remain. Late entry after the show starts is not allowed. The ticket does not include dinner, and regular performances use no animals.

For most visitors, area B is a sensible middle choice for price and view. Special festival prices differ from this table.

Angkor National Museum

Background before or after the temples.

The museum shows the Khmer civilisation, religion, rulers, Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. It is open daily, and a visit usually takes 1 to 2 hours. Hours are 08:30 to 18:00 from April to September. From October to March the winter schedule can run until 18:30, so arrive by 17:00 to be safe. Check the current entry price at the ticket desk.

An audio guide costs $5 per device in German or English and $2 in Khmer. That is the audio guide fee, not the entry ticket.

Siem Reap food tour

Eat your way through the town.

A Siem Reap food tour shows you Khmer dishes at street stalls and small restaurants, usually in the evening. Prices, routes and group sizes differ by operator, so compare what each tour includes: number of tastings, drinks, pickup and group size. Some of these tours appear in the live offers on this page. Tell the guide about allergies and dietary needs before you start.

Night markets and souvenirs

Siem Reap has night markets and souvenir markets, and an art-centre night market is one of them. Opening days and hours change, so check the current schedule with your hotel before you plan an evening around one. Bargain politely and pay in the currency you agreed.

Traditional Khmer dance is offered in some Phare packages. It is not a daily separate show with a fixed ticket, so ask before you book.

Combining town and temples

The Angkor ticket office is on Road 60, about 4 km from the centre, with counters open 05:30 to 17:00. Children under 12 enter Angkor free. A tuk-tuk driver for a day in the park costs around $10 to $15, with remote temples extra, and a guide is a separate service. After a day among temples, an evening show is a good way to end it, but leave time to rest in the heat.
