Siem Reap Airport at a glance

Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, code SAI, opened on 16 October 2023. It replaced the old airport near the town. The new one lies about 50 km east of Siem Reap, and the drive to town takes roughly 1 hour 15 minutes. The former airport was close to town, so do not plan with short ride times from before 2023.

The airport transfer and the trip to the temples are two separate legs. Get to your hotel first, then arrange the park. For the park, look at Angkor Wat tours or at the Angkor Pass, which you must buy yourself. A transfer does not include it.

Motorbikes are not allowed in the airport parking area. Ask your hotel whether a pickup at the airport can be arranged. For most people who travel alone or as a couple, the shuttle is the cheapest option, and a taxi or minivan makes sense for groups and late arrivals.

Phnom Penh to Siem Reap

The direct bus from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap takes about 6 hours. It leaves from a terminal at Street 106 near the Night Market and arrives at a terminal behind the old stadium near Pub Street. The bus does not stop at Angkor Wat. Fares depend on the travel date, so look at the booking page for your day. Once you are in town, see things to do in Siem Reap.

You can also fly. SAI handles the flights to Siem Reap, and timetables change, so check which airlines serve your route when you book. If you want to travel by boat from Phnom Penh or Battambang, ask a local operator for the current service before you plan around it.

Pub Street in Siem Reap

Overland from Thailand

Do not plan this route in 2026.

All border crossings between Thailand and Cambodia are closed. A trip from Bangkok to Siem Reap by land through Poipet is therefore not an option. Fly to SAI or come in through Phnom Penh instead.

The German Foreign Office, in its advice valid since 18 August 2026, warns against travel in the 20 km border strip with Thailand. The US State Department, in its advisory of 15 September 2026, rates Cambodia Level 2 overall and the border area up to 50 km at Level 4, Do Not Travel. It asks for increased caution in Siem Reap Province because of unexploded ordnance. Stay on marked paths at the temples and check both advisories before you book.

Visa and arrival card

Rules for tourists, which can differ by nationality.

Tourist e-visa

The tourist visa (type T) costs $30 for a single entry. It is valid for 3 months and allows a stay of one month. Standard processing is 3 working days. Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months on arrival. The fee was lowered from $36 to $30 on 1 January 2025.

e-Arrival card

The e-Arrival form is free. You can fill it in within 7 days before you arrive or on arrival. It does not replace the visa.

From town to Angkor

The last leg.

A tuk-tuk day around the temples usually costs $10 to $15, and a full-day tuk-tuk tour about $30. Remote temples cost extra. A guide is a separate service. The ticket office is on Road 60, about 4 km from the center, and is open daily from 05:30 to 17:00. Check licence and insurance rules before you rent a scooter as a visitor.
